Simulations Numériques

Since its creation in 2002, the laboratory has been concerned with theoretical astrophysics both on the formal side, with work on theoretical formulations in general relativity or cosmology, and on the numerical side, with simulations of stellar interiors, compact objects, high energy phenomena, jets or interstellar medium, to name a few.

To address this broad spectrum of astrophysical problems, the laboratory assembles a group of researchers with very diverse backgrounds spanning from applied mathematics to atomic, nuclear, condensed matter physics... This diversity also manifests itself in the breath of numerical methods used or developed at the laboratory to solve these problems. This expertise is demonstrated by the significant number of computer programs or libraries elaborated over the years and provided to the astrophysical community and beyond. The computing performed at the laboratory uses all the levels of the GENCI pyramid extending from programs running on desktop computers to applications using tens of thousands of processors on European and top 10 supercomputers.

The theoretical modelling of astrophysical phenomena and the intense use of numerical simulations are the distinctive features of the research carried out at the laboratory. At the national level, the laboratory is among the few UMR dedicated to theory and simulations of astrophysical objects. This unique profile puts us in a privilege position for several scientific projects and leads to a significant number of collaborations with laboratories in France and abroad. The scientific goal shared by the members of the laboratory is to go beyond observations and phenomenological approaches and reach a quantitative understanding of astrophysical objects and events using theory and simulations.
