It’s raining hot Jupiters

Understanding the Star-Planet Interactions (SPI) between solar-type stars and short period hot Jupiter type exoplanets will grant us insight into the history behind planetary system formation.

Planetary outflows, resulting from atmospheric escape induced by the host star’s incident radiation, leads to the build up of circumstellar and circumplanetary material. This material accretes onto the stellar surface in a form of coronal rain. Multiple observations have attributed enhanced coronal activity to this type of SPI.

After an introduction into the observational motivation for studying these systems, I will present recent numerical simulations which test the hypothesis that hot Jupiters can perturb the surfaces of their hosts in an observable manner. The results are highly dependent on the magnetic fields of both the star and the planet, and on the atmospheric conditions of the hot Jupiter.
